Amsterdam Red Light District
If you have any interest in the Amsterdam Red Light District, I highly recommend the book,
Closed Curtain: Lives of De Wallen
. This very insightful book takes you behind the red lights, where prostitution, live sex shows, drugs, coffeeshops, and normal life co-exists. This exploration of Amsterdam's oldest neighborhood also includes insightful photographs.

If you have never been to the
Amsterdam Red Light District, you are in for an interesting and almost festive like experience. Make sure you go right after dusk, or at night, when the glow of the red lights fill the night sky and add to the experience.
The Amsterdam Red Light District, also known as the
De Wallen, is located in the old part of the city center. The area covers roughly one square mile and is bordered by
Warmeostraat,
Zeedjik and
Damstraat. The Amsterdam Red Light District is most famous and notorious for the many red lit
Amsterdam brothels and the women who work from them (also known as
Amsterdam girls or
Amsterdam prostitutes).
Besides the Amsterdam brothels, there are many other notorious attractions that attract tourists from all over the world. These Amsterdam attractions include live sex shows, peep shows, the PIC (Prostitution Information Center) and the Erotic Museum.
If this is a little too much erotica for your taste, there are other attractions of the Amsterdam Red Light District. Attractions include the
Oude Kerk, where
Rembrandt - a legendary painter - was a frequent visitor. The
Den Waag, a former Amsterdam weigh house, is a very beautiful and old building which is rooted in
Nieuwmarkt Square. There is a restaurant on the bottom floor.
All and all, there are hundreds of cafes, restaurants, bars, coffeeshops, hostels, and hotels just begging for your business. Whether you plan on staying a bit or just passing through, the Amsterdam Red Light District is defiantly worth checking out.
